What full mouth reconstruction actually is

Full mouth reconstruction is the comprehensive rebuilding of a smile that needs more than spot repairs. It combines the disciplines of cosmetic dentistry, restorative dentistry, periodontology, and prosthodontics into one carefully sequenced plan — designed and delivered by a single dentist who understands how all the parts fit together. This is the kind of work that, done well, restores both how a smile looks and how it functions for decades. Done poorly or piecemeal, it produces the kind of "remodeled" mouth that fails component-by-component over the following few years.

Patients who benefit from reconstruction tend to fall into a few categories. Some have multiple missing teeth and a collection of failing older restorations that are all reaching end-of-life within a few years of one another — fixing them one at a time misses the chance to plan them as a coherent whole. Some have severely worn-down teeth from years of grinding, leaving the bite collapsed and the face structurally shortened. Some have a combination of cosmetic and structural concerns where veneers alone cannot solve the underlying bite issues, but where addressing the bite without cosmetic finish would feel incomplete. In each case, reconstruction is the answer that solves the whole problem instead of patching the visible parts.

The sequencing question

In reconstruction, the order of operations matters enormously. Veneers placed before periodontal disease is controlled, or crowns cemented onto an unstable bite, or implants restored on a foundation of unaddressed gum issues — these are the failures that happen when the cosmetic work is delivered before the underlying conditions are stabilized. The first phase of any reconstruction at Sunset Smiles is foundation work: healthy gums, stable bite, sound underlying structures. Sometimes this includes periodontal therapy, occlusal adjustment, or restoration of damaged tooth structure that will support later cosmetic work.

Once the foundation is solid, the restorative phase begins — implant placement where needed, with the integration time the implants require to fuse with the bone, crown and bridge work to rebuild missing or damaged structure, and the careful adjustment of the bite to ensure forces are distributed properly across the whole arch. The cosmetic finish (veneers, color matching, final polish) comes last, after the underlying structure is stable. This sequence is slower than patients sometimes wish — most reconstructions take four to twelve months from start to finish — but it is the sequence that produces results that last.

The financial conversation

Full mouth reconstruction is significant work and significant investment. Plans typically range from $25,000 for a moderate rebuild to $80,000 or more for comprehensive cases involving multiple implants and extensive cosmetic work. We approach the financial side the same way we approach the clinical side: with transparency and without sales pressure. Before any treatment begins, you will see the entire plan, the entire price, and the proposed sequence in writing. There are no surprise add-ons.

Most PPO dental insurance plans cover specific procedures within a reconstruction (crowns, fillings, periodontal therapy, sometimes implant restorations) up to their annual maximum, typically $1,500 to $3,000 per plan year. Cosmetic elements (veneers, elective whitening) are usually not covered. We help maximize insurance benefits where they apply and use Cherry financing to spread the remaining cost over up to 60 months at fixed monthly payments. Most reconstruction patients pay a combination of insurance, savings, and financing — and most are surprised to find the monthly cost more manageable than they had feared. We will run the exact numbers with you before any commitment.

Before any work begins, we create a digital smile preview based on your photos and 3D scans so you can see and approve the proposed outcome. For complex cases, we also fabricate a temporary mockup directly on your teeth that you can wear, evaluate, and adjust before the final restorations are made. This step — sometimes called a smile rehearsal — is one of the most important quality checks in reconstruction. You should know exactly what your finished smile will look like before any irreversible work is done.
