What family dentistry looks like in practice

A true family dentist treats more than just teeth — they treat the dynamics of a household. The questions a parent asks about their two-year-old's first visit are completely different from the questions a 70-year-old asks about whether to replace a failing crown. The skills, the pace, and the vocabulary all shift. The strength of a family practice is being able to do both well, in a single calm office, on a schedule that fits the way real families actually live.

At Sunset Smiles, we deliberately build our schedule around family blocks. When you book, mention that you would like the whole household seen together and we will work to stack your appointments — a cleaning for you, a follow-up for your spouse, a first-visit for your daughter — all back-to-back so you make one trip instead of three. We are not always able to accommodate every combination on every day, but we will try, and we will tell you honestly when something has to spread across two visits.

Caring for children

For young patients, the first dental visit is far more about emotional safety than dental work. We let little ones sit in the chair, touch the suction tube, ride the chair up and down, and ask all their questions. If they want a count of their teeth but no toothbrush touching them yet, that is fine. The goal of the first few visits is to make the dentist feel familiar and safe — not to extract perfect compliance on day one. Patients who have positive early visits become adults who actually keep their dental appointments, and that is the long game we care about.

As children grow, we add age-appropriate preventive services — sealants on permanent molars, occasional fluoride applications, monitoring for crowding or bite issues that may indicate a future orthodontic referral. We do not do orthodontics ourselves; when braces or aligners are needed, we work with respected orthodontists in the area. For complex pediatric cases (sedation needs, behavioral challenges, oral surgery in very young children), we refer to a pediatric specialist and continue managing the rest of the family.

Caring for adults and seniors

Adult patients in a family practice need the full range of services — routine cleanings, restorative work, cosmetic options when wanted, and the gum and bite care that becomes more important with age. We treat adult patients the way we treat ourselves: with unhurried explanations, plain-language treatment options, and a strong bias toward the least invasive approach that solves the problem.

Senior patients often have specific concerns we are well-prepared for: dry mouth from medication, gum recession exposing sensitive root surfaces, older fillings or crowns reaching the end of their service life, and the transition to or maintenance of partial or full dentures. Dr. Martinez has cared for many patients through these life-stage changes and brings the same patient, unhurried style to every visit. Bilingual care in English and Spanish is part of how we welcome the wide diversity of families in Jupiter and the surrounding Palm Beach County area.
