What general dentistry covers

Routine care looks simple from the outside — but it's the foundation everything else stands on. Here's what we do at every visit.

1

Comprehensive exam

Dr. Martinez personally checks every tooth, your gums, your bite, and your soft tissues — and explains what she sees in plain language.

2

Professional cleaning

A licensed hygienist removes plaque and tartar above and below the gumline, polishes, and reviews your home routine.

3

Diagnostic X-rays as needed

Digital imaging is used only when clinically indicated — we don't over-image. Today's sensors use a fraction of the radiation of film.

4

Personalized prevention plan

A clear, individualized plan — what to watch, what to do at home, and when to come back. No upselling, no surprises.

Why patients stay with us for routine care

The best dental experience is the one you actually look forward to. Here's how we build that.

Unrushed visits

Every patient gets time — not 10 minutes between three other chairs. You'll never feel rushed, and questions are encouraged.

Honest recommendations

If you don't need work, we don't do it. Treatment plans are conservative and watched-and-waited when that's the right call.

Modern, comfortable office

Quiet rooms, calm design, and amenities like noise-canceling headphones. Designed for people who don't love the dentist — and may end up loving ours.

Most PPO insurance accepted, plus Cherry financing. Call (561) 295-3430 to schedule your routine visit.

What general dentistry actually means

General dentistry covers the everyday care that keeps your mouth healthy for life — exams, professional cleanings, X-rays when indicated, oral cancer screenings, and the early treatment of issues that show up at routine visits. It is the foundation on which every other dental service rests. Patients who maintain a consistent general-dentistry schedule have dramatically lower lifetime dental costs and rarely need the kind of large restorative work (crowns, root canals, implants) that becomes necessary when small problems are allowed to grow.

At Sunset Smiles, our approach to general dentistry is deliberately conservative. We do not invent treatment to fill the schedule. If a small cavity can be watched safely for another six months rather than drilled today, we will tell you so. If a filling is starting to leak and needs to be replaced, we will explain exactly why and show you the X-ray. This honest, watch-first philosophy is part of why our patients stay with us for years and refer their families.

Routine care covers more than you might think

A standard six-month visit is not just about removing plaque. Dr. Martinez personally performs a head-to-toe oral examination at every cleaning — checking teeth for early decay, examining gum tissue for signs of periodontal disease, palpating the lymph nodes in your neck, screening the soft tissues of your mouth and tongue for oral cancer, and evaluating your bite and how your jaw moves. Catching any of these issues early dramatically simplifies treatment, and is the single most cost-effective thing a patient can do for their dental health.

Hygiene visits also include personalized home-care guidance. If you are missing certain areas while brushing, or if your gums are bleeding in a particular region, our hygienist will show you exactly what is happening and what to adjust. We make specific brush, floss, and rinse recommendations based on your individual needs — not generic advice handed to every patient.

When something does come up

Even with great home care, small problems do arise. A small cavity, a chipped edge, a worn-down filling, early sensitivity — these are the normal events of a lifetime of teeth. Because we see you every six months, we catch these issues when they are still small and easy to fix in a single, comfortable visit. A cavity caught early is often a 20-minute composite filling; the same cavity ignored for two years can become a root canal and crown. The math of routine care strongly favors patients who show up consistently.

For complex issues that go beyond general dentistry — orthodontics for kids, advanced periodontal surgery, oral surgery for impacted wisdom teeth — we coordinate with a small network of trusted specialists in the Jupiter area. Most of the patients we refer out eventually come back to us for their continuing routine care because they appreciate the unhurried style.

General dentistry questions

How often should I see the dentist?

For most healthy adults, every six months is the standard recall — a cleaning, exam, and oral cancer screening. Patients with gum disease, certain medical conditions, or higher cavity risk may benefit from coming in every three to four months.

What's the difference between a cleaning and a deep cleaning?

A routine cleaning (prophylaxis) removes plaque and surface tartar above the gumline. A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) is for patients with gum disease — it removes tartar from below the gumline and smooths the root surfaces so the gums can re-attach. We'll only recommend a deep cleaning if it's clinically needed.

Do I need X-rays at every visit?

No. We follow ADA guidelines and only take X-rays when there's a clinical reason — typically every 12 to 24 months for routine checkups in healthy adults, more often if you're monitoring a specific issue. Digital X-rays use a fraction of the radiation of older film systems.

Do you accept insurance?

Yes — most PPO plans, including Aetna, Cigna, Delta Dental, and others. We're happy to verify your benefits before your appointment so you know exactly what's covered. For patients without insurance, our $30/month membership plan covers routine cleanings and exams.

What if I haven't been to the dentist in years?

That's a much more common situation than you might think — and there's zero judgment here. Dr. Martinez does an unhurried first visit to understand where you are, and builds a step-by-step plan to get you healthy at your own pace. The hardest part is just walking in.
